How do I replace a bathtub drain switch?

I bought an old condo and the drain switch (that stops the drain when you want to take a bath) on the bathtub has no switch, it's just a plate with a missing switch in the center. I bought the plate and switch in a package at Lowe's and unscrewed the plate that was on there. I couldn't see anything to connect the new switch to in the pipe. What are my options to fix this? I have a drain stopper that I can use, but it would be nice to get this new switch working.
