Battery on a back-up sump pump system needs replacing?

I have a Watchdog brand battery back-up on my sump pump. The alarm came on this morning and it says that the "battery needs replacing or the terminals need cleaning". The system is only like 2 years old. I would think the battery would last longer than that. Could the battery need replacing already? How would I clean the battery terminals?
