My shower/tub faucet came on all by itself today and I don't know why.?

The handle would turn all the way around, like the stop was broken, but when I pulled it apart, I found that the valve assembly looked okay. I messed with it for a little while and I can turn the water off now but not turn it on. Suggestions?
