I can't get my shower head to stop dripping. I put new plumbers tape around the part where it screws on and?

checked the gaskets and they all looked good. I am wanting to take the handles off and check inside of there but I am nervous. Do I need to do anything special? If I need to turn the water off, I have no clue as to how to do this. I don't know where the shut off is.
