Is it reasonable to just rebuild a water softener instead of replacing?

I have a Kenmore 625.348832 water softener. Water level is always low and hardly uses any salt and obviously is not softening water.
I used this forum a couple years ago to repair it and never really got it fixed adequately. Here is what I did to it back then… Please Advise Me...
