Any plumber types on this fine morning?

Slow draining toilet ( on a town sewer)- I've plunged it to no avail. I guess a snake is next, huh. Why can't I use liquid Plumber type stuff on toilets? It says" safe for all septic systems" and "cuts thru standing water". Why not? If it matters , I rent and my landlord is an absentee (slum) lord so if it wrecks something I can blame on his neglect, fine. If it makes something blow up spectacularly, sweet. If it levels the place, well , that's a bit much. The housewas built in 18-0- something- cloth wires, plaster lath, old plumbing obviously as well, but the line from the house to the sewer was replaced 2 yrs. ago. Whats the deal. Thanks ! Wow-you guys are great ("guys" being a bi-gender term)!OK- The waste line is probably OK as it was done the winter before last, right? The crapper has not actually backed up- just SOOO slow. Negative on feminine products going south either. I don't want to call the pros yet- I might actually learn something today! To the Depot for an Auger goeth I!!! (it's called a stool? Thats funny. If I take a piece of it to HD, is that a "stool sample"? ;)
