my son ,who turns 16 this year is not progressing at school and i dont have high hopes for his gcse's due to?

to be taken next summer. he can actually leave school this summer rather than waste another year in mainstream school. if he leaves school this summer what could he do? i was thinking in terms of an apprenticeship ,like plumber ,mechanic etc any ideas what non academics can do ?
