What is the deal with the plumbers and the candidates?

I don't have a tv, and I don't really follow all the stuff about whats going on with the candidates, but I would really like to know why "Joe Plumber" is on the front page of yahoo and why stations like npr are talking to plumbers more and whatnot. Whats the deal?
