How can I hook my clothes washer directly into the plumbing?

The washer presently drains into the utility sink. We're buying a new washer with a larger capacity, and I seriously doubt that the utility sink, which is relatively small, can handle the increase volume of water. We have copper piping. I'll probably hire a plumber, but I first want to make certain that this project is out of my league.
