Water leak or water meter issue, is it safe to leave the water heater on while turning off main waterline?

Trying to see if there is a leak on the sprinkler valve or the meter is not working right while turning off the waterline in the evening, is it safe to leave the water heater( gas) on? Don't plan to drain it. Thank you!
