how to remove cartridge from delta 1400 series faucet?

I have a leaky faucet and am trying to repair it. I removed the cartridge nut but can't get the cartridge out. I've tried pulling it straight out didn't work. The delta faucet instructions say to put the handle on the stem and turn 1/4 turn after stop limit and then take the cartridge out. But when I tried that the handle just keeps rotating 360 degrees. Please help.
