There's a Hole in the Kitchen Ceiling that the plumber made to fix a leak in the pipes...???

Does the whole ceiling need to come down to put up a new one (this is what he said needed to be done but this guy didn't know much about plumbing and that's his job!)? or Can that hole be closed and fixed by just dealing with the hole itself??? It's not a huge hole really.
