Home has terra-cotta pipes, plumber says starting to break down, getting frequent back-ups, gurgles in drains?

House is on a foundation. Plumber says he needs to come once a month and clean out to solve the problem. This is very expensive. Does anyone else have any suggestions or experience with this type problem?
