what is the purpose of a studer valve in plumbing a home?

To try and eliminate a "sewer gas" oder inside my new home a plumbing contractor added studer valves to all of the roof vents. I am wondering if the valves serve any useful purpose (since sewer gas is heavier than air). NOTE: We later identified an open drain inside as the source of the smell.
