How do I install a drain to divert water out of my front yard?

I have a steep hill in front of my house. When it rains the water floods the front yard and becomes a soggy mess. I was think of installing some pvc pipe with drain holes on the botton and diverting the water some where else. Not sure if this is how to do it.
