The entire neighborhood that we rent in has plumbing issues that are being repaired at the builder's cost. To have the repairs paid for, the landlord must schedule them and have them completed by a certain date.I just received a call from our landlord's wife and they have scheduled repairs (which is completely understandable and is their right, and obligation to do). While we were talking, she said that it would take 5-7 days for the repairs to be completed and that walls would have to be torn out to do so (she wasn't sure about the flooring). She said that the company doing the repairs promised to leave one working sink at the end of each day of work. My questions now are: What about working toilet, shower and washing machine? Obviously the working toilet is the biggest issue to anyone. But I'd like to be able to shower and do laundry too (especially with all the dust that accompanies tearing into walls) and my husband's job requires that he is clean, shaved and in clean uniform each day. Also, how are we supposed to make meals, do dishes with water shut off. Not to mention, we have a two year old and it will be majorly inconvenient to have to keep him only in one area or the backyard while repairs are being made. Would we be within our rights to ask the landlord to pay for a comparable hotel for the 5-7 days of repairs? Also, with all the dist, would we be able to ask that they buy some sort of coverings for our furniture so that it does not get ruined?
