Should I call a professional for water leak on to my carpet?

My water heater broke. The heater was in my finished basement that is carpeted. I don't think there is padding under the carpet (house is recently purchased). Someone told me to just bring the carpet up and let it dry. Another said you had to call a professional. Anyone have experience with similar situation? The area is about 100 sq ft and the carpet is Berber (supposedly Berber retains more water.) Thanks.
