Plumbing problem- is there an easy way to remove the stopper in a normal bathroom sink?

My drain seems to somewhat clogged and i have tried all Drano and Liquid Plumber and can get the stopper just up far enough where i can see a buildup of some matter. i am just wondering if i can get it out myself or my son can do it.
