Would a water leak in the attic cause ceiling to cave or just the drywall?

Must have been there for months and didn't know it. We cleaned up the water and fixed the problem but I'm worried because my boys sleep right under the leak on the ceiling. (It was coming from our air conditoiner pan). Would a leak like this cause the anything heavy to fall from the ceiling if it caved or just the drywall? (I'm a woman and horrible at this handyman stuff! So any help is greatly appreciated!) Thanks Woodtick! :) Now I can go to sleep in peace! :)
