Can a water leak affect an alternator?

Ive put my car in garage as alternator faulty. Its under warranty as only 6 months old. My worry is that i have a slow water leak and have to top it up before travelling. Is the garage likely to tell me that this is the cause for faulty alternator and , therefore, not covered by warranty.
